Terminator Genisys goes where no film has gone before

"Terminator Genisys" has become the first film in history to top $400m worldwide with a figure less than $100m at the domestic Box Office.

With a Box Office haul of $409m, thanks in part to extraordinary demand for the film in China, "Terminator: Genisys" has entered new territory. With a disappointing domestic gross around $90m, it looked like Arnie's action packed reboot was going to fizzle and not even get any traction overseas. We couldn't have been more wrong.

This renewed success late in the film's release cycle reveals how significant the overseas Box Office is for blockbusters, but also makes it harder to predict the true earning potential of a film until major foreign territories have made their mark.

Ahead of its release in China, Schwarzenegger made a splash and did some heavy promotion for the fans. Things paid off and the film stunned analysts reaching the top 4 openings of all time in China.

With the film comfortably over the $400m mark it now goes beyond even "Terminator 2: Judgement Day," but not at the domestic Box Office. However, the unexpected demand for the film abroad could help a sequel gain traction at home with a higher expectation for reboot number 2.
