Belsize Park residents have signed a petition to stop Tesco from building a new store on Haverstock Hill.

Among the 2000 signatories is actress Dame Janet Suzman who is opposed to high street retailers taking over London 'villages'. Comedian James Corden, Damien Lewis and actress Emma Thompson have also backed the campaign.

Tesco has made an application to Camden Council to open an express store on the old site of the HSBC bank on Haverstock Hill which has been bitterly opposed by locals who feel it will threaten local independent retailers.

Famous residents who live in the Belsize Park area include the likes of Simon Pegg, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law.

Activist Jessica Learmond-Criqui has made a deputation and urged a more "holistic approach". The council will review Tesco's application in February.

Belsize Park and the Hampstead area is renowned for its village atmosphere, boutique shops and small independent retailers.

"Belsize is a villagey area – it has no need of a Tesco and its very nature will be threatened.” - Emma Thompson
