Unique da Vinci residency to be the subject of a documentary

The-Residency-Film
Fact Not Fiction Films is to produce a documentary ‘The Residency’ (working title) about the 2016 da Vinci Artist Residency Award. The film will to be directed by award-winning director Ms Monika Grassl.

Five of the leading emerging artists in the world are to attend a unique Residency hosted by da Vinci brushes in Nuremberg from 1 to 11 September 2016. The award offers five emerging artists the opportunity to experience and respond to Nuremberg’s thriving contemporary art scene. The Residency culminates in an exhibition ‘Landscapes of Mind’, that will run from 9 to 18th September 2016. This exhibition showcases the artists painting in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the renowned Galleriehaus-und Defet.

The Residency, is hosted by da Vinci Artist Brushes, the leading manufacturer of artist brushes in the world. Producer Tristan Loraine commented:

“I am so delighted that Monika Grassl will direct this piece. I met her earlier this year at the premier of her film ‘Girls Don't Fly’ at Hot Docs, the Canadian International Documentary Festival and I was very impressed with her work.”

Production Manager and Assistant Producer Beth Moran stated:

“We believe this unique artistic event will make for an amazing character-led piece. Five of the leading emerging artists in the world going to a da Vinci residency, in a city with such an art history as Nuremberg, directed by Moika Grassl - this will be a great documentary.”

With an understanding of landscape as corporeal, geographical, psychological and or political, artists Suzi Morris, Melody Park, Sam Stopford, David Schroeter and Jonathan Kelly reveal one or more of these aspects through a range of painting practices.

The artists were selected for this award from five of the leading British art schools as representatives of painting today.

Suzi Morris (University of East London), co-founder of the Award and a former Art Director in Film, is currently undertaking a professional doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London. Morris’ research and painting practice expands the dialogue between art and science. As genomic medicine creates viruses to cure cancers, Morris draws upon the homologous relationship between pigment and viruses to create viral landscapes of colour and mark making.

Jonathan Kelly (Royal Academy) born in Hereford, is currently studying at Royal Academy Schools. Kelly is attracted to the earliest art, the Paleolithic, as it looks beyond today’s complexities to more universal concerns of life, death and sexuality. He paints totemic idols, deities and venuses, and employs reductive geometries to create flattened mandala-like structures that suggest a devotional function.

Melody Park (Kingston University) is an artist who is quicker with her hands than with her head. Thus, when she was inspired by something, she wants to tap into it immediately, at that very moment. She paints quickly without interpretation and works continually without retouching.

David Schroeter (Royal College of Art) lives and works in London. Schroeter earned his BS at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York in 2010 and his MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London in 2016. He has exhibited in London, China, The Bronx Museum of Art and Columbia University New York

Sam Stopford (Glasgow School of Art) lives and works in Glasgow, after graduating in 2016 from the Glasgow School of Art, is an artist utilizing painting as a means of appropriating and deciphering the flood of images from the mass media. He uses images of news reportage, mass media and popular culture concealing these within one landscape.

The ‘Landscapes of Mind’ exhibition will run from 9 September to 18th September 2016 at:
