It was the perfect rivalry for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. This year's biggest most over the top release vs 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' for Best Movie.

Every year the MTV Movie Awards puts the most popular films in this category and gets audiences to vote for them online. As we know, online voting is a powerful phenomenon and young people are particularly active when it comes to the social web and standing up for their favourite stars.

This year's winner was indeed not 'The Hunger Games', despite earning over $500 million at the box office this year, but 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1'. How could this be? Well in reality, there is a huge fan base for the Twilight movies that far outweighs the brief history of 'The Hunger Games' online. You have to go deep into the 'fan territory' to see just how hardcore the following is.

However, Harry Potter was also beaten in this category, and that has more fans than these two movies combined. Hmmm. It looks like the filmmaking and appeal of the Twilight movies had more impact on audiences than everything else. They certainly had a romantic edge as the Best Kiss category went to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart again (despite Pattinson's absence).

Other highlights of the night included a special preview trailer of the Dark Knight Rises which caused an emotional stir for one of the actors.
