The new trailer for Disney’s latest Star Wars adventure has been met with applause, revealing a darker, more gritty narrative with impressive space battles.

Following on from a series of re-shoots and changes to the script, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is set to be released this December just a year after the epic record-breaking “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which nearly hit the $1 billion mark in the US alone.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” follows Jyn Erso, who leads a band of 'misfit' heroes to uncover the plans for the Death Star. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards who was at the helm of the action-adventure remake of “Godzilla” in 2014, and sci-fi drama “Monsters” that was released in 2010.

Starring Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen and Riz Ahmed, the new Star Wars film is set after “Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith” but before the events of the fourth film. It is the first stand-alone release in the Star Wars anthology with a female lead, which was met with praise, but also faced some criticism from die-hard Star Wars fans when the casting was announced.

The film will be released in theaters December 16th.
