Leonardo DiCaprio steals Oscar limelight after 22 years of nominations

Leonardo DiCaprio took to the stage Sunday night to accept his first Oscar win after 5 nominations spanning 22 years.

DiCaprio stole the show with his passionate speech after winning Best Actor for his performance in “The Revenant,” which to many of his fans was long overdue. The actor was first nominated for Best Supporting Actor back in 1994 for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” After missing his chance, he then received the nomination in 2005 for his role in “The Aviator.” Again, he went home empty. But then in 2007 DiCaprio got another chance with the nomination for Best Performance in “Blood Diamond” and still failed.

When it came to “The Wolf of Wall Street” we were certain this was the moment, however to huge disappointment, DiCaprio’s much loved and despised depiction of wealthy stock-broker Jordan Belfort failed to win over Academy voters. Finally, last night he broke through.

DiCaprio goes all out in ‘The Revenant’ playing Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who is left for dead after being mauled by a bear during a fur trading expedition in the 1820s. While the film received a mixed response from critics, it was arguably one of DiCaprio’s best performances and deserved recognition.

Taking to the stage after such a long journey, the actor took a moment to thank his supporters, his family and highlighted the urgent need for us to address climate change, which received a resounding applause.

“Let us not take this planet for granted.”
