J.J. Abrams to delay Star Trek 2?

As J.J. Abrams prepares to promote his latest sci-fi thriller 'Super 8' word is that the sequel for his 2009 smash hit 'Star Trek' could be delayed.

In the careful art of being vague, J.J. Abrams told CNN, or rather, hinted, that the script for 'Star Trek 2' needed more work. The sequel to the most successful Star Trek movie is highly anticipated, but for Paramount and Abrams to get it right, will mean more scripting, and working on a 'massively' good round 2.

If we look at film sequels in general, there tends to be a higher expectation for the 2nd, and so the pressure is on to make it as good as possible, even if demand is high. If a bad sequel comes out, then studios struggle to determine whether fans will go out for number 3.

Looking at the Matrix sequels, 'The Matrix Reloaded' was talked about for years. The sequel to the untold ending of 'The Matrix' was so highly anticipated, but when it came out, the disappointment was huge. This led to a weak performance at the box office for 'Matrix Revolutions'.

However, when looking at the Star Trek franchise, J.J. Abrams has brought Paramount into uncharted territory. A re-boot is one thing, but keeping it fresh for round 2, that's another.

J.J. Abrams told CNN: "We're working on the script and story and doing everything we can to make it well. I would just so much rather make a movie that's worth people's time than make a movie that's on time."

What do you think? Do you want to see Star Trek 2 next summer for its planned release, or can you wait a bit longer for it to be really good?
