The first trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence” has been released by 20th Century Fox which promises to deliver “spectacle on an unimaginable scale.”

Following the success of the original "Independence Day" back in 1996, we’ve waited almost 20 years to see what may come after the earth saved itself from an alien invasion. Will Smith had reportedly been approached to star in the sequel, but turned it down.

Roland Emmerich is back in the director’s chair for the sequel along with some of the original cast including Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Liam Hemsworth, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” actor Brent Spiner also appear in the sequel.

“Independence Day 2” takes place several decades after the attack in the original movie following a planet wide effort to create a space defense for a future alien encounter. Will it be enough?

"Independence Day: Resurgence" will be released in June 2016.
