Ryan Gosling's directorial debut has been met but a barrage of enthusiastic damning in Cannes, but to give the guy some credit, it's pretty hard to make a film in the first place.

Directorial debuts are not new, and plenty of Hollywood names have gone behind the camera to 'give it a shot' as it were, but still, critics enjoy destroying what art is created even if it does merit some respect.

I'm not saying we should all be patting him on the back and saying well done, but I think a lot of people tend to forget the difficulties of making a film the first time round. Even if someone is famous and does a bad job should we really be hanging them out to dry? Is that what we do in the film industry when someone does something new? We go out and destroy them? After all, it's not just Ryan Gosling we're talking about, it's the entire film crew that is reflected when we hear criticisms about movies when they come out.

The reason why I felt it important to highlight this is because all directors have to make a start, regardless of their background and level of fame, and often when it turns out bad, people are extra mean with those that are 'famous' and at the end of the day, they are just human, and trying something new.
