DreamWorks greenlights 'Need for Speed' movie

EA and DreamWorks team up on 'Need for Speed'

DreamWorks Studios has announced it has bought the film rights to Electronic Arts' highly popular 'Need for Speed' game franchise.

Gamers have been button bashing their way at high speed for the past several years and Hollywood is now finally making an action flick deriving from it.

The story has been developed by John and George Gatins, and the screenplay will be based on the series as a whole, and not individual releases. The growth of gaming has become an avenue for Hollywood studios to tap into a new audience that loves high-octaine action. We have seen succesful runs of the 'Fast and Furious' franchise, including most recent box office smash 'Fast Five', and audiences are hungry for more.

Scott Waugh wil direct the pic and its production is slated to start early 2013 for a 2014 release.

"It's fantastic to be working with a team that shares not only our love of cars, but also our passion for creating blockbuster action experiences. This collaboration will be greatly enhanced with the team at DreamWorks"

- Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President, EA Games Label
