Disney Buys Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion, with new Stars Wars Trilogy


George Lucas and Disney make epic deal

Walt Disney Company announced today that they are purchasing Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion dollars.  It doesn’t stop there, as they also announced that a new Star Wars trilogy will commence in 2015, with possibly more after that.  This acquisition road is one which Disney will continue to go down, having already acquired Pixar ($7.4 billion) and Marvel ($4 billion). 

Lucasfilm is an American based film company best known for producing the Star Wars films.  It has also produced other top films including the Indiana Jones franchise.  The company is a world leader in the development of special effects technology, animation, lighting and sound technology.

George Lucas is a 100% owner of Lucasfilm and the purchase agreement will be in cash and stock.  Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will now be the division’s president.  Lucas will remain involved as a creative consultant on all new Star Wars productions.

Disney has officially stated that the, “Acquisition continues Disney’s strategic focus on creating and monetizing the world’s best branded content, innovative technology and global growth to drive long-term shareholder value.”
