Disney accused of being racist after shrinking John Boyega in China poster

Disney is under fire for allowing the Chinese version of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” poster to shrink John Boyega.

The 23-year old British actor who plays Finn was visibly shrunk in the China poster by more than three times and replaced with special effects and the Millenium Falcon. The actor in the US poster is more prominent to the right of the poster while the original Star Wars cast are visibly smaller.

Some Star Wars fans have criticized Disney for shrinking a black actor in this way for audiences in Asia in an apparent ‘racist’ move.

You can see both posters and compare the difference below:

Despite the switch, Boyega still remains visible on the China poster but the original cast have been blown up slightly to take centrefold. Chewbacca and Poe Dameron were also removed from the Chinese version. With less than two weeks to go before the release analysts are predicting the film could create the biggest surge in theater attendance for the last decade.

Recently Mark Hamill revealed he had trained for 2 years to prepare for the role of Luke Skywalker while Lupita Nyong'o struggled with the motion capture technology and her scenes were significantly reduced. Will you be watching the film?

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens December 18th nationwide.
