Actor George Clooney has written an open letter condemning the Daily Mail after the news site released a story saying that the mother of Amal Alamuddin objected to their wedding

According to the BBC, the Mail Online took down the article following a complaint from Clooney after they alleged that Alamuddin's mother wanted her daughter to be married into the Druze sect, a small religious group of less than 1 million members.

Following the article, George Clooney publicly denied that this was the case, and wrote an in-depth response to it on USA Today.

"First of all, none of the story is factually true. Amal's mother is not Druze. She has not been to Beirut since Amal and I have been dating, and she is in no way against the marriage — but none of that is the issue. I'm, of course, used to the Daily Mail making up stories — they do it several times a week."

Clooney was particularly concerned about the implications the article had on religious ideals, and was very critical of the exploitation that had occurred in his public letter.

It is no secret that the Daily Mail is known for making controversial stories about celebrities however they responded saying that the article had been written by a trusted freelance journalist and that they had not released a fabricated story:

"She based her story on conversations with a long-standing contact who has strong connections with senior members of the Lebanese community in the UK and the Druze in Beirut….We only became aware of Mr Clooney's concerns this morning and have launched a full investigation."
