Could Harry Potter beat Avatar at the box office?

NEW YORK, USA - After just one week of release Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has accumulated over $400 million worldwide breaking US and International Box office records for a November release. in the UK, the new Harry Potter outing was a smash hit, making it one of the most lucrative films of all time at home in just a few short days.

Avatar, the epic box office smash that overtook Titanic last year created a new 3D era of filmmaking, establishing itself as a benchmark film and propelling the new technology to an international audience. Whilst Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has a long way to go to reach Avatar, it is suffice to say that domestic cinema audiences are growing, and box office tallies along with it, for mainstream and family targeted films. For example, Walt Disney Pictures has comfortably carved its name into a family brand and provided popular entertainment with such films as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise starring Johnny Depp, and it is likely 3D adaptations of popular cartoons, fantasy stories with a mixture of sci-fi and the surreal, will become the biggest earners.

Harry Potter's International Box Office potential

Whilst the popularity of Harry Potter has grown around the world, the film still has another part to go, which will be released next year. Time will tell whether the Deathly Hallows part 1 exceeds $1 billion at the global box office, but whatever happens, the total of the 2nd installment combined with the first, is likely to be close.
