The fourth of July weekend has certainly given Universal Studios the victory they had been looking for.
After an impressive opening, 'Despicable Me 2' has earned over $142 million in 5 days dominating the box office, and pushing other titles further down the list. This is in sharp contrast to the hugely expensive western action 'The Lone Ranger' starring Johnny Depp, which had been expected to compete ferociously with Universal's release. Analysts had expected 'The Lone Ranger' to do far better than it's atrocious $48.9 million haul, that didn't even come close to 'Despicable Me 2'.

Universal also scored another statistical victory as the 5-day total for their new release was the best of all time. The only other film that has managed to beat this is 'Fast and Furious 6', which earned close to $100 million in it's opening weekend.
