For years, Sony has denied it and Dan Aykroyd has promised it… a 3rd Ghostbusters movie.
Back in July this year it was announced that ‘Tropic Thunder’ writer, Etan Cohen, was rewriting the script for GB3. At the time Director Ivan Reitman was not available due to other film commitments. However, it has been announced that his new project, Draft Day with Kevin Costner, has been delayed. Reitman now has a timeframe within which Ghostbusters 3 can be made.
Bill Murray has said NO to the new GB3. Murray has often voiced his dislike for sequels and said in an interview with David Letterman in 2010 that he would only do a 3rd Ghostbusters if he was killed off in the first reel. In December 2011, the National Enquirer reported that Murray shredded the script he received for GB3 and sent a note to Aykroyd saying, “”No-one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts.” It appears that even with a new, ‘modernized’ script Murray will not be accepting a role in the new film.
Dan Aykroyd has always firmly believed that GB3 will happen and has said,
“We’ve got a brilliant new writer on it and we’ll be passing the torch on to a new generation. We’re working on it to make it just right to satisfy our fans. I’m confident we’ll be in production in the next year.”
When Aykroyd was asked in August to comment on the absence of Murray in the new film, Aykroyd said,
“It’s sad but we’re passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn’t seem to be coming and we have to move on. It’s time to make the third one.”
The question now is whether the re-write will be a sequel or a reboot? We will keep you posted as new information is released.
Filming would commence next summer and be on the circuit in 2014.
