UK Trade Union: Bectu

BECTU Is an independent trade union in the UK representing 25,000 members working in TV, film, theatre and in the wider entertainment industry.

The organisation advocates job protection in the UK film industry as well as providing its members with a host of benefits and product discounts including a reduction in the BFI Membership.


BECTU strives to protect worker jobs in the industry but also to improve salaries, pensions and work conditions. It is run by the National Executive Committee which is elected every 2 years by a secret ballot.


BECTU proposes a wide range of services to its members to help them with their work placement from providing copyright advice to Insurance services:

  • Copyright Consultants: Advisory to members, legal advise and representation
  • Financial Services: A benevolent Fund to help members in financial difficulty
  • Hearing healthcare discounts from audiologists
  • Public liability insurance cover of up to £5 million
  • Insurance for small business covering equipment, product liability and buildings
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance to protect members against claims
  • Job finding services


The BECTU website provides a number of tools and resources to help members with their employment including a student register for young people to guide them to make the right choices in the industry. There are also application forms and pdf downloads for different sectors of the entertainment industry including background artistes (extras).
