Battleship movie starring Rihanna and Liam Neeson set to fail?

Critics have been quick to condemn Battleship starring Rihanna ever since its inception and now James Cameron has added his beef to the mix.

Hollywood studios often face tough criticism for sequels audiences cringe about, but after 7 Harry Potter films, there doesn't seem to be too much hate towards the much loved wizard.

Battleship takes its origins from the board game, and while there is no prequel as such, the film is reportedly one of the most expensive ever made, and is clearly a brand picture. The story depicts a fleet of ships that must do battle with an unknown armada to survive and prevent their destructive goals.

Starring Liam Neeson, and Alexander Skarsgard, the film has an interesting cast, including Rihanna's first on screen outing.

James Cameron sinks Battleship

Avatar director James Cameron has been quick to draw fire on the latest blockbuster to be made out of a highly successful board game franchise.

We have a story crisis. Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film. This is pure desperation.

Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hit theaters. If a brand has been around, Harry Potter for example, or Spider-Man, you are light years ahead. And there lies the problem. Because unfortunately these franchises are becoming more ridiculous. This degrades the cinema. - Collider

Although Battleship may not have the greatest originality being based on a board game, its success will be tested when it is scheduled to come out in 2012. Expect to see more sequels.
