“Unfortunately, that day has come.” – Apple CEO resigns

Steve Jobs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned in a sudden announcement that was widely viewed as inevitable due to his ailing health. The co-founder of now the world’s largest company steps down ahead of the launch of the iphone 5 which is expected to take the world by storm upon its release.

Steve Jobs has been instrumental to the success of Apple and has changed the way entrepreneurs think about business in the 21st century. Tim Cook will preside as CEO whilst Steve Jobs becomes chairman. Early speculation around the announcement points to the fact that Jobs had planned to step down for a while but had been waiting for the ideal moment to do so.

It is no secret that the CEO’s battle with pancreatic cancer took a toll on his health, and it is likely that he faces other issues that has made his life in the CEO seat very difficult. I am deeply saddened that Steve Jobs has had to give up something he cherishes, but Tim Cook has been acting as CEO for quite some time.

What does this spell for the future of Apple? It will unlikely affect future product launches, but the history of Steve Jobs will certainly alter, as the man who has been at the forefront of the company’s vision, now steps down.

Steve Jobs : Letter of resignation

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple.

I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.”
