Acting legend Alan Rickman dies at 69 in London

Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69 in London after battling cancer. The much loved actor who has been an icon in British theatre and on the big screen for the past 30 years enlightened a generation of fans and portrayed some of the biggest roles of our time.

Rickman went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and started his acting life on the stage before appearing in several TV series in the 80s including the BBC’s ‘Barchester Towers’. He later went on to star in British TV films and made his name in Hollywood where he became revered, playing major roles in big Hollywood productions.

From embodying the evil Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991 classic 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' opposite Kevin Costner, to playing the calculated mastermind of the Nakatomi Plaza heist in ‘Die Hard’ as Hans Gruber, Rickman was a master of subtle dark humour, bringing powerful presence to all his characters.

Alan Rickman also played the much loved role of Professor Snape in the Harry Potter franchise, bringing an eery, dark, calculated character to the forefront of J.K. Rowling’s big screen adaptation.

Rickman’s family confirmed to The Guardian that he died on Thursday. His contribution to the arts, and his life’s work will be greatly missed.
