The 10 things you need to do to break into film

A lot of people want to make a career in the film industry. Many have tried and failed but those that succeed have a certain resilience to them that keeps them ahead of the game. Whether they are actors, directors, producers or writers, the big names, the ones you truly remember, have managed to keep their focus during hard times.

Below is a list of 10 things you can do to get the best chance at success in the industry:

1. Work hard

Working hard is one of the well-known clichés of the film industry, and making progress takes a certain amount of resilience and a good work ethic to get there. This means making sacrifices: While others are out drinking or partying, the people working hard are focusing, and getting just a little further ahead, making chances for themselves.

2. Have self-belief

The self-belief asset is a driving force behind those that succeed in film. They are committed and believe that they can succeed. At the end of the day, if someone doesn't believe in themselves, or respect themselves, they cannot progress.

3. Focus on direction

Direction is really important as it is very easy to get distracted and try to do too many things at once. Many people who are trying to make a solid career try to do too much, and are too spread out over different areas (acting & directing for example). They should focus on their core strengths first, then branch out once they've got good progression.

4. Be aware

Technology is changing all the time and trends are constantly evolving. Being aware of the latest tools, the big players, the networking events and the up and comers can make a difference on the journey towards career success. Researching these areas, and keeping up-to-date on what's happening in the industry is vital.

5. Understand the rules

There are certain rules in the film industry, not just the rules of how to shoot but the rules of the game. Knowing how to speak with people, how to present oneself, how to approach producers, and build a reputation all make up part of the career progression ladder.

6. Know the people

Making the right connections is one of the most challenging areas because not everyone is good at communicating or presenting. It's an industry that requires a certain level of people skills, and making the right choices in these areas can certainly prove transformational.

7. Have the skills

Skills are a must-have. Without them, there's no point in trying to make it because there are so many people with the skills who are trying as well. Being slightly better than the competition can be worth its weight in gold and it takes time to learn those skills.

8. Be visible

Self-promotion is just as vital in the film business as having the skills to produce great work. People need to be visible. They need to constantly market themselves, and give their expertise a chance. The same goes for attending events and being physically present at major film festivals and industry gatherings.

9. Take the chance

People that take chances are far more likely to succeed but many don't even bother because it's too far out the comfort-zone. Maybe the weather is bad, perhaps the train ticket is too expensive, or it could just be that it's too much hassle.

One event can make the difference, and one connection can change someone's life forever, so sometimes, the 3-hour train ride or the plane trip is worth it.

10. Be different

This is above-all the most important area. Without it, an individual can't stand out. Many try to do what others do and fail because they don't do anything new. It's just more of the same..and there's plenty of supply for 'more of the same' talent.
